Not many video games utilised the first Dualshock controller’s joysticks to the full, with many games still focusing on the directional buttons instead. SCE Japan Studio’s innovative 1999 game Ape Escape was the first to truly do so, as the game’s controls were specifically developed around the joysticks.

That resulted in one of the most intuitive platformers to play with the Dualshock’s joysticks, as players used the right joystick to a variety of unique and fun gadgets to capture apes and use the left joystick to move the protagonist around. There are still not many platformers that use the joysticks like Ape Escape did.
