New Dune Images Show Zendaya’s Chani And House Atreides

More images of Dennis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune movie have emerged, courtesy of Vanity Fair.

After getting a look at Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides (who looked like he was posing for an album cover), we now have images of Zendaya’s Freman character Chani and the members of House Atreides. Check them out:

Zendaya looks a bit too recognizable for me, but Oscar Isaac as Paul’s father Duke Leto Atreides makes quite the impression, though I’m not sure if his look accurately reflects the character in the book. Some of the other images obtained by Vanity Fair show Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck, a clean-shaven Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica (looking a bit like a robed Sith).

There’s a grounded look to this Dune so far, which leaves me curious about Baron Harkonnen’s appearance. Villeneuve told Vanity Fair that the character is “created with full-body prosthetics, is like a rhino in human form”, but also said that he casted actor Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd to avoid making Harkonnen too caricatural and more of a “predator”.

Vanity Fair’s feature also revealed some interesting information about the upcoming movie’s female characters. Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother and member of the mind-reading Bene Gesserit, will have a bigger role than she did in the book. “She’s a mother, she’s a concubine, she’s a soldier,” Ferguson told the publication. “Denis was very respectful of Frank’s work in the book, [but] the quality of the arcs for much of the women have been brought up to a new level. There were some shifts he did, and they are beautifully portrayed now.”

An example is the character of Dr. Liet Kynes, a prominent ecologist on the planet Arrakis. Instead of being depicted as a white man, Kynes will be played by a black woman, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, in Villeneuve’s adaptation due to a lack of female characters.

Villeneuve also revealed why this Dune is only the first of two halves, like It. “I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” he said. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.” We’ll see how that move pays off when the movie hits cinemas on 18 December.
