Nintendo Is Bumping Up Switch Output To Meet Demand

It looks like Nintendo is looking to increase the production of its Nintendo Switch console owing to an increase in demand, according to a report by the Nikkei Asia Review.

Parts suppliers told the website that about 10% more units were expected to be made this year, with the suppliers and assemblers told to get ready for “additional production” between April and June.

Nikkei also learned that some parts suppliers received orders that were “50% larger than originally planned”, with a source saying that “There are signs procurement is being moved forward to deal with the disruptions in the supply chains”.

There was still some uncertainty about the production, however, as a Nintendo representative told Nikkei that “We hope [suppliers] will be responsive to the production increase, but for procurement of some parts, the outlook remains uncertain, and we can’t forecast exactly how many Switches can be supplied.”

This move isn’t entirely surprising. Two months ago, it seemed likely that Nintendo would find itself facing Switch shortage problems as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Nikkei noted that that continues to be the case, and that online store prices have increased according to Kakaku.com Trend Search.

The PS5 is also expected to face a supply shortage, albeit for reasons not related to COVID-19. Instead, its high specs and their impact on the next-gen console’s price are being cited as the cause.

In the meantime, it looks like we’ll have to contend with increased Switch prices on third-party websites. Hopefully, this new normal will go back to the old normal sooner than later.
