Invincible Creator Robert Kirkman Is Getting Sued By The Comics’ Artist

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman is being sued by William Crabtree, who also co-created Invincible as he was the colorist for the first 50 issues. According to Crabtree, he was tricked into abandoning his copyright in Invincible and missed out on profits from the popular animated adaptation of the comic book series, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
According to the complaint written by Crabtree’s attorney Devin McRae (via The Hollywood Reporter), Crabtree says that he and Kirkman had an oral agreement that granted him 20 percent of single sale proceeds of Invincible and 10 percent of any revenue generated from “other film or television commercial exploitation of the Work together with any derivative projects based on the Work and any allied or ancillary rights in the Work.†However, he claims that Kirkman later made him sign a document that made him relinquish his rights.
The lawsuit reads:
“Kirkman falsely told Crabtree that Crabtree’s rights and financial interest in the Work would remain unchanged if he signed the Certificate of Authorship and that the document would simply allow Kirkman to market the licensure of the Work more easily, resulting in greater profits for both of them.”
It remains to be seen if this is the reason why the animated series has yet to announce a release date for Season 2, and the lack of news surrounding the second season. In the meantime, check out my review of the series here.
