Diablo 4’s Repetitive Dungeon Designs Are Apparently Intentional

Players have been voicing their complaints about the lack of dungeon variety in the Diablo 4 beta, but according to the game’s lead developers, this is just a beta problem. In the beta, dungeons have been criticized for having the same layouts on repeated runs, which is unusual for a series that typically randomizes them. This has led to players calling the dungeons repetitive and linear.

Im gonna say it, dungeons are not fun from diablo4

However, in an interview with NME, game director Joe Shely explained that the beta is limited to one area in the open-world game and that there are over 100 dungeons in the full game. He expects players to be adventuring through many different dungeons rather than doing the same one repeatedly as they level up their characters.

Shely went on to say that Diablo 4’s dungeons aren’t always about slaying demons and that some require you to complete tasks such as placing objects on altars or completing events. He emphasized that players are only seeing a fraction of the game’s dungeons in the beta.

General manager Rod Fergusson also spoke with NME about Diablo 4’s dungeons, saying that they will have a “sense of place” compared to the randomly-generated Greater Rifts in the previous game. He reassured players that Blizzard will continue to work on dungeons and other features after the game launches.

Fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the comments from the developers and have voiced their worries that nothing will change before Diablo 4’s release in June. One user who claims to have played the endgame beta said that the dungeons were not very different.

In a separate interview with Eurogamer, Shely and Fergusson explained that the Fractured Peaks region in the beta only takes up about 20% of the game’s overworld and that the dungeons are intentionally similar to tie them to their location in the world.

Diablo 4’s next beta, which will be open to everyone, starts this Friday.
