The Last Of Us HBO Season 2 Will Not Change A Thing From The Game Sequel’s Story; Doesn’t Care About Haters
Here’s a move that’s sure to get everyone’s panties in a twist: The Last of Us Season 2 live-action adaptation for HBO will not be making any changes to the story that’s already in the game The Last Of Us: Part 2 on PS4.
The second season of the well-received adaptation will not be changing things up to address Part 2’s negative criticism. In an interview with GQ, series co-creator Neil Druckmann said he isn’t concerned with the haters whatsoever when asked about the gaming community’s negative reaction to TLOU Part 2’s direction.
“I guess, to go back to the earlier [Todd Phillips] quote from Craig, which is like… I don’t care. How they react is how they react, that is completely outside of our control. So how do we make the best TV show version of that story? That’s the problem that we wrestle with every day. “
The live adaptation’s director Craig Mazin also pointed out that the worst possible outcome to Season 2 is indifference. He brought up the first season’s third episode and its wildly-polarizing reactions as an example.
“To the extent that the storylines move people to rage, confusion, or disappointment or anger. Well that, I suppose, is preferable to the worst possible outcome, which is indifference. There’s been a lot written about the third episode of this season, and it’s an episode we’re very proud of, and it moved a lot of people. It’s one of the lower-rated shows on IMDb for one reason – a lot of people came on and gave it a 1/10. Not 5/10. One. The median score on that episode is 10. And the mean is an 8 or something. And that’s because there are incredibly strong opinions one way or the other. But I would much rather have a show that lives off of 10s and 1s, than a show that lives off of 5s.”
To sum it up without bringing up major spoilers, many folks did not like the main character’s fate, as well as the path one main character took in their quest for revenge, only to find out later that revenge is bad. There are TONS of films that touch upon the topic of revenge and they’re arguably better than TLOU Part 2 from a narrative and pacing standpoint. But to each their own, basically.
The one major issue stemming from this is that the game’s plot was leaked months prior to its release, with many people not feeling and getting angry about the changes from that perspective rather than experiencing it themselves. Had the leak not happened, perhaps the vitriol or blowback wouldn’t be this insane.
It did make for some entertaining videos like the one we did a few years back.
