Before Avengers Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers Endgame, Captain America Civil War was the biggest and most ambitious movie in the MCU. Pitting its own superheroes against each other is a common trope in the comics, which this movie successfully adapted to live-action.

It capitalized on the connections and bonds audiences had developed with the characters over the course of more than 10 movies, proving that they cared enough for these characters to be invested in a movie where these superheroes were at each other’s throats.
