Fret Not, Diablo 4 Players: The Buffs & Separate Gem Slots Are Coming
Diablo 4 is this year’s most talked-about action RPG for PC and consoles. Even with a pretty awesome launch and stable servers, there is still room for improvement.
The Diablo 4 team at Blizzard are hard at work with buffs and improvements, according to a recent Diablo 4 Campfire Chat livestream featuring game director Joe Shely. The game will get a “chonky patch” with a ton of buffs that will affect many things across many classes.
“Our philosophy is to prioritize improving [player] choice by looking at things that are not working and making them better. Now, it hasn’t felt like that in the last two weeks, right? And when I came here today, I was thinking about—I don’t have a shirt like this—but I thought about getting a shirt and then writing ‘it’s time for the buffs’ on it. I didn’t do that, but it is time for the buffs.”
Diablo franchise general manager Rod Fergusson added that normal dungeons currently make for better XP farming spots than endgame Nightmare dungeons because of the number of Elites that spawn; that didn’t make sense to players and that’s not what Shely wanted to happen.
“We want [Nightmare dungeons] to be a great place to farm, including if you want to farm dungeons over and over, if you want to loop dungeons.”
Sigils will create waypoints that you can teleport to, so you can skip the travel time to get to the Nightmare Dungeon, with the XP amount you earn increasing.
In addition, gems will be treated like a resource instead of an inventory item. Right now, gems take up precious slots in your inventory and stash, so the team is going to fix that.
“The idea is to change the way you acquire gems so that they show up in your materials or currency tab, rather than your inventory. And then the way that will work is you go to craft your gem in the same way that you do today, and you just use a certain amount of that material, similar to the amount of equivalent, actual gem inventory slots that you’re using now, but as materials.”
The aforementioned class buffs and XP-earning updates will happen in the first season of Diablo 4, which is on mid-to-late July; the actual season will last 3 months. The gem storage update? Probably at the end of October or at least during the second season at the earliest due to how complex this can be for the team.
