Percy Jackson and the Olympians Review: A Surprising Wonder
By Xandria Morden|December 15, 2023|0 Comment
I wasn’t quite a fan of the Percy Jackson movies so I wasn’t quite sure about a series but then again, who isn’t a fan of binge watching some show on fantastical worlds and mythological creatures amirite?
The series starts out slow but grows on you slowly. It follows the plot of the first book in the Percy Jackson series, The Lightning Thief. It introduces a 12 year old little Percy Jackson who is a little outsider and descrbies himself as well, a troubled kid. He sees things that no one else can, like his teacher who somehow turns into a monster during a field trip.
Soon enough, Percy learns that he isn’t actually going cuckoo and he isn’t hallucinating. There is indeed a magical world that somehow exists alongside our boring one and the Greek gods actually exist. He soon learns that he is a demigod, and the son of his mortal mother Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull) and an unknown Greek god. Demigods apparently attract deadly beasts which is why he can see these mythical creatures like the Minotaur.
To protect little Percy, he is sent to a demigod safe haven aka Camp Half-Blood. He meets other demigods there and soon learn that there is a catastrophic war about to happen and only he can stop them (what a surprise). He sets out with his satyr protector, Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), who was his best friend in the human world who also got him kicked out of school and Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), a daughter of Athena.
Unlike the films, I love that they kept Percy young and sort of made it into a coming-of-age film. However, the graphics and production is pretty darn good. I love how terrifying the monsters look and how the scenes are magical. It’s definitely a show that children as well as adults who are fan of the books will enjoy! The timing is also delightful as it’s a nice series to watch during the Christmas season!
The first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere Dec. 20 on Disney+
