Cat Quest III Hands-On Preview: Set Sail Across The Purribean

The Singaporean-based studio, The Gentlebros are back with their third instalment of the beloved feline adventure series, Cat Quest III, formerly known as Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean. This highly anticipated sequel builds upon the charming, action-packed formula of its predecessors, offering a perfect blend of exploration, combat, humour and, of course, cats. We had the opportunity to experience an early build of the game, which is slated for a multi-platform release later this year.

In this new chapter, players will set sail as a pirate cat navigating the vast and mysterious Purribean Sea. The adventure begins with your feline hero discovering a treasure map leading to the legendary Purribean Treasure. Along the way, you’ll face rival pirate crews, mythical sea creatures, and uncover ancient secrets buried beneath the waves.

Swashbuckling Feline Fun

Once ashore, the gameplay transitions to the beloved top-down action RPG style that fans adore. Your cat hero can explore lush jungles, haunted ruins, and lively pirate ports. The controls are smooth, and the combat system is a delightful mix of fast-paced melee attacks and magical abilities. Dodging and parrying enemy strikes feels responsive, and you can chain together combos for devastating effects.

The demo allowed us to navigate our ship across several islands, each filled with unique quests, hidden treasures, and enemy encounters. The sailing mechanics are intuitive, with options to upgrade your ship’s speed, firepower, and defences. Combat on the high seas involves strategic cannon fire and boarding enemy ships for intense paw-to-paw action.

The Gentlebros have outdone themselves with the game’s visual design. The Purribean is brought to life with vibrant, colourful graphics that pop on the screen. From the swaying palm trees to the shimmering ocean waves, every detail is meticulously crafted. The character designs are equally charming, with each pirate cat sporting a distinctive look and personality.

The soundtrack complements the adventurous spirit of the game perfectly. Lively, pirate-themed tunes play as you sail the seas, while more ambient tracks set the mood during exploration and combat. The dialogue, filled with humorous cat puns and playful banter, adds another layer of charm to the experience.

Based on our hands-on time with Cat Quest III, it’s clear that The Gentlebros have another hit on their paws. The combination of engaging exploration, refined combat, and delightful visuals makes for a compelling adventure that fans of the series—and newcomers alike—will enjoy. We can’t wait to see what other surprises await in the full game.

Cat Quest III will be available for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on 8 August.
