US$70 For Games Is Fair, Says PlayStation CEO

Next-gen games, especially on PS5, are more expensive. Games like Demon’s Souls are selling for US$70 or roughly close to RM300 for a standard edition.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said that he believes the price increase is fair.

He said:

“Yes, yes, I do [think it’s fair],

If you measure the hours of entertainment provided by a video game, such as Demon’s Souls compared to any other form of entertainment.

I think that’s a very straightforward comparison to draw.”

However, Ryan did not reveal whether future first-party PS5 games will also cost US$70, stating that he will be “not making any predictions about anything that might or might not happen in the future.”

He also said that they are “not hearing” about the complaints about the PS5’s meagre 665GB of storage space, so they will consider the issue only after “people unbox their PlayStations and start to start to use them.”

Last but not least, interestingly enough, when asked about whether the sequel to 2018’s God Of War will be a PS5 exclusive, Ryan replied:

“Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today.”

You can take that as you will, considering that even Horizon Forbidden West will be a cross-gen title.

[…] This is not a surprising move, considering that Xbox head Phil Spencer has previously warned that they wouldn’t be able to maintain their prices for long. Perhaps we’ll even see console and Xbox Game Pass prices increase in the future, but for now, that won’t be happening yet. Meanwhile, Sony has been selling first-party PS5 games for US$70 or RM300+ since its launch in 2020. […]
