[Report] China’s Gaming Ban List Revealed; Fortnite & PUBG On It

Sucks to be a gamer in China, especially if you love battle royale shooters. It also sucks to be a publisher whose games rely on the burgeoning Chinese market for that sweet player base number.

So it’s rather telling that someone on Chinese gaming forum NGA (via Reddit) chose to leak a ban/to-be-banned list made by China’s official online games ethics committee.

True, the list may not be confirmed since it’s from one source, but it does paint a picture of how China handles game bans and games that have banworthy content.

The following games require corrective action to still be sold and distributed in China.

  • Arena of Valor by Tencent. What needs to be changed? Overly revealing female characters, rewards given based on rank, distorted concepts of history and culture.)
  • League of Legends by Riot Games/Tencent. What needs to be changed? Overly revealing female characters, rewards given based on rank, inharmonious chatroom.
  • Blade & Soul by NCSOFT. What needs changing? Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom.
  • Chu Liu Xiang by NetEase. What needs changing? Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom, game missions include fraud.
  • Overwatch by Blizzard. What needs changing? Game visuals promote incorrect values, inharmonious chatroom.
  • Diablo by Blizzard. What needs to be changed? Inharmonious chat, game missions include fraud.)
  • World of Warcraft by Blizzard. What needs to be changed?Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom.
  • Westward Journey by NetEase. What needs to be changed?Overly revealing female characters, inharmonious chatroom, distorted concepts of history and culture.
  • Code: Eva by Tencent. What needs to be changed? Rewards given based on rank, distorted concepts of history and culture.
  • The Legent of Mir 3 by WeMade. What needs to be changed?Inharmonious chatroom.
  • Swords of Legends Online by Aurogon. What needs to be changed? Inharmonious chatroom.

What does it mean by “game visuals promote incorrect values”? That they’re not stereotypical enough or not adhering to communism values?

The following games are on the ban list along with the reasons why they’re on the ban list.

  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds by Bluehole. Reasons for ban: Blood and gore.
  • Fortnite by Epic Games/Tencent.Reasons for ban: Blood and gore, vulgar content.)
  • H1Z1 by Daybreak. Reasons for ban: Blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Alliance of Valiant Arms by Red Duck. Reasons for ban: Blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Ring of Elysium by Tencent.Reasons for ban: Blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Paladins by Hi-Rez.Reasons for ban: Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Free Fire Battlegrounds by Garena. Reasons for ban: Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Knives Out by NetEase. Reasons for ban: Overly revealing female characters, blood and gore, vulgar content.
  • Quantum Matrix by NetEase. Reasons for ban: Blood and gore, vulgar content, inharmonious chat.

PUBG, Fortnite, and Tencent & Netease games will be taking a hit in their player base numbers because they’re made out of, you guessed it, Chinese gamers. It seems that the battle royale games on the list are the prime target for bans, either because the market for these games are huge or the genre needs curbing from the country.

What does this tell us about the China gaming market? Is it in trouble? Who knows, but the market’s going to be shaken up with news like these.
