Checklist For Your Netflix Binge Fest In February

The new year has just started and Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Netflix Asia will be offering a bunch of new content next month, with the premiere of several highly-anticipated series that are ripe for a binge fest.

Check out my personal picks from Netflix’s upcoming February 2019 lineup below:

Russian Doll (1 February 2019)

Russian Doll

What happens when you take the time loop trope/concept from movies like Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow, as well as from certain episodes in sci-fi series like Star Trek, and expand it into an entire season?

You get Russian Doll, a new series following a young woman named Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.

It would be interesting to see how the writers attempt to expand what is considered to be a tired and overused trope into eight full episodes. Here’s hoping it does something unique by twisting our expectations.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for Russian Doll below.

The Umbrella Academy (15 February 2019)

The Umbrella Academy Netflix Trailer

For those who don’t know, The Umbrella Academy is an Eisner award-winning comic book mini-series written by ex-My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and drawn by Gabriel Ba. It features a dysfunctional family of superheroes similar to that of Marvel’s X-Men or DC Comics’ Doom Patrol (which Gerard cites as one of his main inspirations).

The source material is one of the crazies and quirkiest stories I’ve ever read, channeling the best of superhero comics and also subverting their tropes. With a talking chimpanzee, aliens, a looming apocalypse, and time-policing assassins to boot, I guarantee that you’ve never seen anything like this before.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for The Umbrella Academy below, featuring an exclusive song cover of ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ performed by Gerard Way himself and ex-My Chemical Romance lead guitarist Ray Toro.

The Dragon Prince Season 2 (15 February 2019)

The Dragon Prince Season 2

Created by the writers of the iconic Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender animated series, the first season of The Dragon Prince debuted last year and introduced viewers to a fantasy world with dark magic, interspecies conflicts, and elves.

Imagine Lord of The Rings characters with Game of Thrones-level of political intrigue and family drama, though tone it down to a level acceptable for children, and that’s The Dragon Prince in a nutshell.

While the first season had the tougher job of introducing its characters and building its world, the upcoming second season will be when the CGI animated series tries to prove its mettle and continue expanding on what’s already been established.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for the first season of The Dragon Prince below.

Those were just my personal picks for Netflix’s February 2019 lineup. Besides that, there’s actually more new content in store for viewers next month where that came from, including movies like Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, The Other Boleyn Girl, and Fifty Shades Darker.

Whoever says that the first few months are like Mondays of the year are wrong.
