Singtel + SK Telecom = Asia Esports Boost?

Singtel has announced that it’s going be working together with South Korea’s SK Telecom to promote the growth of gaming and the esports industry in Asia. This official collaboration between the two telecommunication giants will mean the development of digital gaming content and services for gamers in the entire region.

What does this partnership entail for the esports in Asia? According to the press release, Singtel and SK Telecom will cooperate by leveraging each other’s assets to scale up regional esports events and leagues, as well as provide both original and third-party gaming content for their respective portals.

Both Singtel and SK Telecom are not new to developing esports on their own. Singtel has already organized many major esports events, including last year’s PVP Esports Championship (which attracted 3,600 teams competing in Dota 2 and Arena of Valor for a US$300,000 prize pool) and most recently the FSL Elite League of Legends tournament.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom already has its own esports team, SK Telecom T1; a South Korean pro League of Legends team. With this collaboration, it’s looking extend the reach of its games business and increase the profile of its esports team in the Singtel Group’s markets of Singapore, Australia, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Singtel International Group CEO Arthur Lang said: “SK Telecom is synonymous with gaming and has been a leader in the industry since the beginning. They have a wealth of experience and one of the most recognisable esports teams and personalities in the world today. Coupled with the Singtel Group’s deep local knowledge, telco assets and reach to over 675 million customers in the region, of which almost a third are gamers, we have the synergies and opportunity to really grow and develop the gaming ecosystem for gamers in Asia. I am very excited about this partnership and looking forward to working together to delight the gaming community in the region.”
