Elden Ring’s Lore And Story Is A Match Made In Heaven

Developer FromSoftware’s next major title is Elden Ring, and it was officially revealed at E3 2019. Hidetaka Miyazaki, director, shared some insight about the game as well as author George R.R. Martin’s involvement in the development of the game.

The collaboration between the two began when Miyazaki spoke with Martin. Speaking to IGN, here’s what Miyazaki said;

“It all started with me being a fan of Mr. Martin’s works. A Song of Ice & Fire and its drama adaptation Game of Thrones are both masterpieces. I am also very fond of Fever Dreams and Tuf Voyaging.

When we sat down together, it clicked right away. I proposed to make a game together, and he said yes. I was really surprised by how smoothly it all went.”

Miyazaki continued by explaining that he is responsible for Elden Ring‘s story, while George R.R. Martin will craft the lore and mythology that players will unravel through pieces of environmental storytelling, such as insightful flavour texts, as featured in previous FromSoftware titles. George R.R. Martin is well known for his fabulous world-building. For example, his fantastic Game of Thrones world has much to offer.

Martin did not want to involve himself in the game’s story as he believes that storytelling in the form of a video game might limit the potential of his ability. Albeit, Miyazaki did clarify that both the main story and the lore by Martin are heavily influenced by each other.

“Thanks to Martin’s lore, Elden Ring’s world and characters naturally have a lot more depth and personality,” added Miyazaki.

Lastly, Miyazaki pointed out that there are no plans for an Elden Ring novelisation, but he didn’t rule it out.

“A novelization would mean that all the secrets and mystery that is hidden in our game would be revealed. From a director point of view, I’m not sure if that would be the right thing to do.”

Elden Ring is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
