YouTuber Etika Found Dead By NYPD

Former gaming YouTuber Desmond ‘Etika’ Amofah was found dead after the NYPD discovered his body in Manhattan’s East River yesterday. He was initially reported missing just last week after posting what was heavily implied to be a video with signs of suicidal intent, while his belongings were reportedly found on the Manhattan Bridge two days before his body was recovered.

Here’s a statement that was given from the NYPD (via Kotaku):

“At approximately 18:18 hours [yesterday], police responded to a 9-11 call with a person floating in the water in the vicinity of the South Street Seaport in the confines of the 1st Precinct.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive, unidentified male at that location.

The NYPD harbor removed the male to Pier 16, where EMS pronounced him deceased.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.”

Etika has been struggling with mental issues for a long time, getting arrested by the police just several months ago during a live stream. His YouTube channel was shut down in October 2018 after he uploaded pornography on it, while he has been posting suicidal thoughts online since earlier this year.

The late former streamer was best known for playing and commenting on Nintendo games on YouTube and Twitch, both of which he referred to as the JoyCon Boyz (after the Nintendo Switch controllers).

Mental health issues are not something to be taken lightly and they’re a serious problem, especially so for YouTubers and game streamers who are expected to churn out constant quality content or stream games for hours at a time.

The National Suicide Prevention Hotline in the U.S. is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-273-8255. A list of international suicide hotlines can be found here, including those available in Malaysia.
