Neon Genesis Evangelion Creator Announces Shin Ultraman Movie

Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno co-directed 2016’s Shin Godzilla (also known as Godzilla Resurgence) alongside Shinji Higuchi. It was a great movie, dealing with politics and introducing a new King of Kaiju returning to his more villainous monster roots (instead of the hero he’s been depicted in recent years).

The Ultraman franchise will soon be getting the same treatment. According to Gizmodo, Tsuburaya Productions, Toho, and animation studio Khara have announced a new Shin Ultraman movie project. Slated for release in 2021, it will be directed by Higuchi, with the screenplay by Anno.

The official announcement reveals that Anno will only be joining the Shin Ultraman project after completing Evangelion 3.0+1.0, the concluding installment to his rebooted Neon Genesis Evangelion reimagining series of movies.

It will be fascinating to see how Anno ultimately deconstructs the Ultraman franchise, the same way he did with Shin Godzilla. More details will probably arrive in the near future, so stay tuned on Kakuchopurei.

In the meantime, check out Shin Godzilla if you haven’t.
