The Southeast Asian Geek’s Guide To Tokyo
Location: Akihabara area, 3-chÅme-11-6 Sotokanda, Chiyoda City, TÅkyÅ-to 101-0021, Japan
What’s There: Arguably one of the best ramen franchises in Japan. The Jangara specials will blow your ramen tastebuds. With a creamy broth and a sizeable portion of ramen noodles & pork charsiu, this is the first and last word in ramen short of going to Fukuoka or Sapporo.
Price Range: US$10 or so. Totally worth it if you want to get stuffed with the best ramen around the block.
Location: 8F, Yodobashi, 104 Kanda Matsunagacho, Chiyoda City, TÅkyÅ-to 101-0023, Japan
What’s There: There’s a ton of food to get here in this “food court” of sorts. But here’s the spot where one can order the crazy beef bowl dish. You can order either regular or mega-sized. You also can order some succulent Japanese curry or hamburger/steak dishes if you want something a bit more “Western”.
Price range: US$8+
Location:
Toyosu: 6 Chome-3 Toyosu, Koto City, Tokyo 135-0061, Japan
Tsukiji: 5 Chome-2-1 Tsukiji, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan
What’s There: The best damn sushi on the entire planet. Both these spots are open around 6am and 7am, and save for a few shops, they are mostly vacant with a few customers sitting in and eating sushi and raw fish fresh from the docks.
The Tokyo trains are usually operational after 5.30am, so if you want to beat the crowd and get your sushi fix for a decent price, go to these respective market places, find a sushi shop that looks enticing, and dig in.
Price Range: US$10 and higher. For the quality fish you’re getting, the prices vary and are usually affordable.
Location: Close to Remm Akihabara hotel, 1-chÅme−6−5, Kanda SakumachÅ, Chiyoda City, Tokyo.
If you’re not in the mood to wake up early to visit either the Toyosu fish market or to Tsukiji, you can just hang around Akihabara and wait for this place to open up. Not only does this place has THE freshest sushi in the neighbourhood, the price you’re paying means you’re getting the portions you need to define and cleanse your palette.
If you don’t mind spending more, just ask for the “omakase” and get served with the best umi and fish slices that are just as good as the marketplaces.
Price Range: US$20 and higher. The best fish requires the fattest wallets.
