Magic: The Gathering Pro Shows Support For Hong Kong, Doesn’t Get Banned

Magic: The Gathering pro player and Hall of Famer Lee Shi Tian has pulled off a “blitzchung” in his recent post-match interview at the recent Mythic Championship 5. Unlike Blizzard, Wizards of the Coast has decided not to punish Lee for his actions.

After winning the match that got him into the Top 8, Lee went on stage with a red scarf covering half of his face. It’s a clear of his support for the pro-democracy side in the Hong Kong protests. The pro-democracy protesters wear masks and scarves to hide their identities from Hong Kong law enforcement and also to protect themselves from tear gas.

When asked about what he’s feeling after winning the match, Lee’s answer implied that the Hong Kong protests have definitely been affecting his life negatively. At the same time, he celebrates the freedom that has allowed him to reach this stage in his MTG career.

“Life has been very tough in my hometown in Hong Kong.”

“It feels so good to play as a free man!”

– Lee Tian Shu, Magic: The Gathering Hall of Famer.

Through his own Twitter account, Lee said that he’s thankful that no one stopped him from doing what he did but he’s also confident that WotC will be getting a lot of heat, similar to the NBA. He encourages people to support him by supporting Magic: The Gathering.

WotC is definitely getting a lot of brownie points for deciding not to go the Blizzard route. In case you didn’t know, a Hong Kong Hearthstone player by the name of Chung “blitzchung” Ng Wai was recently suspended for an entire year and had his prize pool taken away after issuing pro-democracy statements in a post-match interview at the Hearthstone Grandmasters.

Blizzard has since reduced the punishment to just six months of suspension and returned Chung’s prize money but a lot of people have already made up their minds to boycott Blizzard. Lee said to Polygon that Chung’s actions “inspired him a lot”.
