EVO Japan 2020 Showcases Disparity Between Fighting Games In Prize Payout Announcement

The folks at EVO Japan 2020 just revealed its prize payout chart and it clearly showcases which fighting game its organizers, publishers, and sponsors are solely focused on.

So to recap, these are the 1st place prizes for the respective games.

  • Street Fighter V: US$9,000.
  • Tekken 7: US$9,000.
  • BlazBlue- Cross Tag Battle: $4,500.
  • Samurai Shodown: US$4,500.
  • Soul Calibur VI: US$4,500.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: a pro controller.

If you win second place for your respective game, here’s what you’ll get:

  • Street Fighter V: US$3,600.
  • Tekken 7: US$3,600.
  • BlazBlue- Cross Tag Battle: US$1,800.
  • Samurai Showdown: US$1,800.
  • Soul Calibur VI: US$1,800.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Heartiest congratulations.

To put things into perspective, SSBU is currently the game with the most entrants in this year’s tournament (via Eventhubs).

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — 2,987
  • Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition — 1,462 (2019: 1,024)
  • Tekken 7 — 960 (2019: 512)
  • BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle — 554 (2019: 224)
  • Samurai Shodown — 532
  • Soul Calibur 6 — 507 (2019: 288)

We would give the benefit of the doubt that the prizes may not be finalized at this point in writing. But suffice to say, if you’re not solely playing SSBU, you’ll stand a chance to win quite a bit of money. Otherwise, have fun attempting to win a special gold controller. Nintendo clearly has a long way to go to bolster goodwill towards the people supporting its party-game-turned-competitive-title.
