Borderlands 3 Is Getting Its First Level Cap Increase This Week

Happy upcoming Valentine’s Day, vault hunters! You’ll be getting a double dose of love from Gearbox via an event and a level cap increase.

Let’s talk about the event first. The Borderlands 3 Broken Hearts Day event will start from 14th February (before) 7am GMT+8 and ends on 21st February 12:59am GMT+8. During this festivity, enemies will have hearts floating above their heads; shoot them down to either blow it up, drop loot, or even turn enemies into temporary allies.

The more you shoot down, the more rewards you’ll get. Here’s a loot chart:

  • 10 hearts – “ECHOcardiogram” ECHO Skin
  • 25 hearts – “Cosmic Romance” Weapon Trinket
  • 50 hearts – “Terminal Polyaimorous” Legendary Maliwan SMG
  • 75 hearts – “Heartbreaker” Vault Hunter Skin
  • 100 hearts – “Wedding Invitation” Legendary Jakobs Sniper Rifle

You can choose to opt out of the event before starting a session, but why would you do that if you’re getting extra loot, especially with the level cap increase that’s attached to this February update?

Bump

Speaking of which, the cap will be increased from 50 to 53, giving players three more skill points to play with. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but the level designers in Borderlands 3 said that because skill trees are now more impactful, Gearbox wants to avoid throwing the game’s balance in front of a speeding bus. However, the team plans to expand more ways to further player growth that isn’t skill points-based.

“Just handing out the same number of levels and skill points [as in previous games] would really actually just kind of destroy the game in terms of balance, and also homogenize everyone’s build. Once everyone has everything, it’s all the same, and you can’t express yourself through your character and their gear.

In Borderlands 3, we’re looking at it a lot differently based on that. In this first one we’re going to do just the three levels. Long term, we’re exploring some other ways to encourage further player growth that might not be completely tied to skill points.”

Other changes include:

  • Skippable cutscenes (yes!).
  • Guardian Rank toggling, in case you want to make your game harder and less messy.
  • Event toggling, so you can opt out of Broken Hearts Day.

You can also expect a couple of updates this coming March, like Fight For Your Life improvements and Mayhem 2.0.
