Christoph Waltz Wants To Be In Another Alita Movie, But…
By Melvyn Tan|April 11, 2020|0 Comment
What I remember best about Alita: Battle Angel, apart from that stunning Motorball scene, was the sight of Christoph Waltz carrying an oversized rocket hammer. While I’m not sure how much he liked carrying that hammer around, Waltz is definitely a fan of the overall experience of acting in Alita, as he very much wants to be involved in a sequel.
Speaking to Collider, the actor expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of being in another Alita movie. “Of course! Of course I would! But, you know, I’m as wise as you are. I haven’t heard anything and I’m a little disappointed and surprised that I haven’t heard a thing so far, because I know that it has followers,” Waltz said.
“I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result.”
However, now that Disney has acquired Fox, who originally released the movie under the 20th Century Fox banner, Waltz doesn’t have high hopes that a sequel will happen. “You know, it was Fox and Fox doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s Disney,” he said.
“Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue. Maybe they’re working on something and I wouldn’t be the first person to hear, but meanwhile, I haven’t heard anything.”
Alita earned $404 million globally on a budget of $170 million. That doesn’t signify massive success in my eyes, so I had doubts that a sequel was going to happen anyway. Having said that, Terminator Genisys did marginally better with a global gross of $440 million on a budget of $155 million, and while it didn’t receive a sequel, Paramount still continued the franchise with (the mediocre) Terminator: Dark Fate.
As for the Disney thing, Alita was only rated PG-13 (although it did get pretty brutal at times), and with the House of Mouse even saying that they won’t tone down Fox’s R-rated properties, the movie’s content might not be a big issue for them. Still, it’s been over a year and there’s yet to be any news of a sequel, so regardless of the reason, it looks like fans will have to continue waiting and join Waltz in his disappointment.
