Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Prequel Comic Resolves Gender Canon Conundrum

Just like 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will give players two choices; between a male or female protagonist, both of whom are named Eivor.

Unlike Odyssey (in which female protagonist Kassandra was canon), the developer previously mentioned that this time both genders will somehow be considered canon (due to an upgraded Animus machine which has allowed present-day protagonist Layla Hassan to choose whichever gender she wants).

However, the official Dark Horse graphic novel series Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Song of Glory, which acts as a prequel to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, has chosen to portray Eivor as a woman.

It details the female Eivor’s life and backstory prior to the events of the upcoming game. There may be spoilers ahead for those who wish to play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as fresh as possible, so I’ll insert some warnings below:

The description for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Song of Glory reads (via official website):

Tensions escalate when a village caught between two rival kingdoms is brutally raided.

Eivor, warrior and daughter of wise King Styrbjorn, dispatches the raiders, rescues the villagers, and claims the settlement for her father.

She also seizes a prisoner–a woman, Gull, left behind by the rivals–who declares she possesses the secrets of Asgard itself.

But there is more to Gull than meets the eye, and her capture will bring death and destruction to Eivor’s family.

In disgrace and lured by the promise of treasures and glory, Eivor undergoes a dangerous quest to regain her honor, but what terror awaits in the forgotten temple of a powerful god?

All the time, her brother Sigurd forges his own legend while searching for fortune in the lands of the East.

Far from home, he finds new weapons and fresh plunder, making a discovery that will change his destiny forever . . .

There you go, Assassin’s Creed fans. It looks like Eivor has royal blood, and that she (or he) has a brother named Sigurd (who might be an Assassin or Templar).

Also, don’t worry much about which gender is canon, folks. In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it’s already been confirmed that players can change genders at any time (due to that aforementioned Animus upgrade).

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is slated to release for the PS4 and Xbox One, as well as PC via the Epic Games Store, Uplay, and Stadia on 17 November 2020.

In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
