Virtua Fighter x Esports Announced

During the Tokyo Games Show 2020 long-as-heck weekend online showcase, Sega announces the Virtua Fighter x Esports project. So far, the trailer is billing it as a tournament circuit with a sizeable prize pool. Either contestants will be playing the recent Virtua Fighter entry, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, or a modified “esports only” high-res version of the game just for this tournament.

Virtua Fighter, which was created as the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, will restart as an eSports title in celebration of Sega’s 60th anniversary, starting in Japan. Details on the project will be announced in a future update.”

The project will start first in Japan. More details will be shared later. This is quite a big deal for many fighting game fans because a number of high-level Street Fighter players like Itabashi Zangief and Fuudo started off their competitive path with the Virtua Fighter series.
