Nintendo Switch Consoles Are Now Being Made In Malaysia

Earlier this year, we reported that Nintendo was looking to increase the production of its Nintendo Switch consoles due to an increase in demand from the COVID-19 pandemic and the launch of Animal Crossing New Horizons.

It turns out that one of those new supply manufacturing chains is in Malaysia, besides locations in China and Vietnam, as confirmed by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa (via Bloomberg).

According to anonymous sources, Nintendo has added Sharp Corp. as an assembler of its Switch console, as the Japanese company works to stabilize production amidst U.S.-China trade tensions.

That Nintendo Switch Malaysia factory is reportedly owned by Sharp. This is possible because Nintendo’s main assembly partner Foxconn Technology actually owns a stake in Sharp, which connects Nintendo and Sharp.

Nintendo asked Foxconn Tech during the Trump era to provide alternative manufacturing sites outside of China to hedge against the trade war. This is how the Japanese games giant ended up directing Nintendo Switch manufacturing to Sharp as the latter had extra capacity in Malaysia.

However, the production volume in the Malaysian factory is reportedly “limited”, as Furukawa has revealed that those assembly lines aren’t yet running at full capacity but the first batch from them is about to hit stores soon.

We’re already in the holiday season, and Nintendo will need to keep up with demand with more supply. Still, it’s nice to know that a Malaysian factory is pumping out those Nintendo Switch consoles.
