Shin Kamen Rider Movie Is Coming From Neon Genesis Evangelion Creator

It looks like it’s a good day for Kamen Rider fans everywhere. Neon Evangelion Genesis creator Hideaki Anno will be directing a new Shin Kamen Rider movie. This was announced via a press conference in Japan and on Twitter.

Anno previously co-directed 2016’s Shin Godzilla (also known as Godzilla Resurgence) alongside Shinji Higuchi. It was a great movie, dealing with politics and introducing a new King of Kaiju returning to his more villainous monster roots (instead of the hero he’s been depicted in recent years).

In late 2019, Anno also announced a Shin Ultraman movie, which is supposedly slated to release sometime in 2021 but was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a written statement (via Kotaku), Anno said that all grade school boys in Japan looked at the Kamen Rider franchise with extreme hype since its debut fifty years ago.

He said:

I was one of them.

I got a lot out of the TV show fifty years ago, and fifty years later, I started this project with the feeling that I’d like to return the favour in a small way.”

According to Anno, it’s been six years since the idea for the project was first created and that he’s working hard to make an entertaining film that can be enjoyed even by those who aren’t familiar with Kamen Rider.

Shin Kamen Rider is slated to premiere in March 2023. This is all part of an effort to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary. Earlier today, Toei announced a reboot to the classic 1987 Kamen Rider Black, which will be titled Kamen Rider Black Sun.
