Hackers Have Stolen FIFA 21 & Frostbite Source Code From EA

Due to a massive data breach, EA has its games’ source code and tools stolen (via Motherboard).

The hackers responsible has stolen about 780GB worth of internal development tools and the full source code for FIFA 21. The hackers also took the source code for EA’s patented Frostbite Engine, which is the company’s most popular in-house game engine that’s going to power the next Battlefield game.

An EA spokesperson has confirmed that the company has suffered a data breach; the files accessed by hackers were affected. No player information was shared, as far as we know.

“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy.

Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.”

This seems like a targeted effort if EA’s player info database was not compromised. Would one say that this is a form of karma, given the company’s method of taking money from players for “F2P” mechanics in its paid-for triple-A games? You be the judge.
