Money Heist Korea Joint Economic Area Director Reveals Why He Chose Unified Korea Setting

Courtesy of Netflix Malaysia, we attended an online press conference for Money Heist Korea Joint Economic Area.

Netflix reveals an all-new la banda who are set to pull off the ultimate heist in an alternate world where North and South Korea have reunited. A new country without borders comes with the printing of a new unified currency that will act as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy. That is, until a crew of thieves — led by the Professor — band together to accomplish a heist without limits. A heist that will go down in history as a revolutionary crime.

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area will feature director Kim Hong-sun and writer Ryu Yong-jae’s distinct take on the popular Spanish series La Casa De Papel. Like its Spanish counterparts, the remake boasts an assembly of characters with unforgettable personalities who will keep you at the edge of your seat.

About why he chose the unique unified Korea setting, Money Heist Korea Joint Economic Area director Kim Hong-sun said:

“I had interviews with the global press earlier and the global press actually met with me and I asked questions to them. Can this be something that can happen in their own countries? They answered; it’s not going to be easy in their respective countries to have this kind of big event unfolding. That is, in fact, something I had to think really deeply about from the start.

It had to be really convincing and feel like it’s realistic. That was the part I put the most effort in. As I thought deeply about it, I thought maybe the inter-Korean relationship can be put in a near-future sort of time setting and if you place it that way, it can be accepted by many audiences.

That’s how I felt. This is going to be streamed around the world, so I was thinking that the story of the Koreas can be told to the global audience because that will spark curiosity of the global fans. The fictitious Joint Economic Area setting was created for the show, so the South and North Korean situation is something I wanted to depict in the show.

If this happens in the future, if we are on the cusp of reunification in the future, if this is the reality, what would happen? I actually wanted to infuse that kind of hope into the show as well.”

Meet the new la banda and watch them in action when Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area premieres on 24 June, only on Netflix.
