PlayStation VR2 Will Be Out In Early 2023

Sony has finally committed to a release window for its upcoming PlayStation 5 virtual reality headset and its controllers.

The PlayStation VR2 will release in early 2023 according to the company; the news was announced on PlayStation’s Instagram account. Analysts like TF International Securities has claimed the headset will start mass production this year, launching in the first quarter of 2023, so the impending announcement isn’t far-fetched.

“[Our] latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and several component providers of PS VR2 will start mass production with about 1.5M units shipments in [the second half of] 2022. Sony may launch it in Q1 23, depending on the development schedule of PS VR2 game titles.”

On that note, PlayStation said the company will have more than 20 games ready for the PSVR2. Here’s a quote from Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan on the matter:

“Right now, there is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of PlayStation VR2. That energy, that effort and that money will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR 2 headsets grows also.”

The PSVR2 will feature 4K HDR, 110-degree field of view visuals with foveated rendering, and an OLED display that offers 2000×2040 resolution per eye and frame rates of 90/120hz. It’s clearly a huge improvement over the original PSVR, though the price point will determine whether people will make the VR jump or not.
