Soul Searching: A Peek Behind Indie Game Spirit Interlude

Spirit Interlude is a relaxed and cozy autobattler filled to the brim with spirits to discover, each with their own abilities. You can assemble and split your team into unique patterns that perform attack and defence, and the game allows for you to play in a casual way, or in a way that puts your tactical brain to work. It ultimately follows your pace, and is fun for multiple types of players.

The game currently has a demo out on Steam, and is slated for a full release later this year. You can stay up to date with their progress on their official Twitter and Discord!

The dev team took time out of working on the game to give us a quick interview – we had the opportunity to interview the Bali-based Boing Boing Games about their upcoming title.

1. What is your inspiration behind Spirit Interlude? Can you tell us more about it?

About the inspiration, we can separate it into two different aspects; the gameplay and theme.

About the gameplay, it’s directly inspired by Teamfight Tactics with the idea: “what if we made TFT but you split your team between attack and defence?” And then we iterated the design from there.

About the theme; it’s a bit complicated – but to make it more simple, my artstyle made my boyfriend think about the anime Mushishi where we can see many spirits in nature, mixed with some ghibli inspiration.

2. How long have you spent developing the game so far?

Development started in July 2022.

3. Can you tell us more about the dev team?

The dev team are Me (Mita) and Bastien. We’re a couple, but he’s French and I’m Indonesian. I’m handling all the 2D and animations, Bastien is handling the rest of the game project.

4. What are your future plans for Spirit Interlude after launch?

For now we’re focusing on what we’re doing, so we don’t really think about the future yet. We try our best to launch the game first.
