Lil’ Guardsman Review: A Fresh Take On Indie Comedy Adventure

Platform(s): PC (version reviewed), Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series
Genre: Narrative-driven deduction adventure fantasy indie game.
Cozy video games remain as popular as ever, with game developers introducing fresh twists on traditional features commonly found in this genre. One such example is Lil’ Guardsman, developed by Hilltop Studios. This comedic adventure game presents a delightful blend of puzzles, storytelling, and deduction, set in a charming fantasy kingdom. Despite its categorization as a cozy title, Lil’ Guardsman features elements that seem atypical of the conventional cozy gaming genre, offering a fresh perspective on the definition.
In Lil’ Guardsman, players take on the role of a 12-year-old girl named Lil, who has been entrusted with fulfilling her father’s duty as a gate guard for the fantasy realm known as the Sprawl. As Lil, you have the ability to question humans, elves, goblins, cyclopes, and other quirky fantasy creatures using deduction tools. Your task is to decide whether to admit, deny, or jail potential visitors to the Sprawl. The thoroughness and accuracy with which you uncover the truth will directly impact your overall performance, earning you a rating from 1 to 4 stars. The higher your rating, the more gold coins you will receive. However, if your average score at the end of a shift falls below 2 stars, you may face the risk of being fired. Not to worry, as you can always choose to restart the interrogation process and try again.
The deduction tools provided to Lil consist of a decoder ring, an X-ray device, a metal detector, truth spray, and a bullwhip. These tools can be used with the assistance of a power crystal. She initially received these limited power crystals before starting her shift at the guard shed.
However, she has the option to purchase them or upgrade her guard tools at a designated store. Lil then gets a device called the Chronometer3000, a gadget that grants her the ability to go back in time. This Chronometer3000 becomes available after Lil passes certain levels in the game. However, its prolonged use carries the risk of altering her universe into a catastrophic state.
The characters you encounter during interrogations are perhaps the best features of the game. Each one is unique, and the humour they bring to the table can be outrageously hilarious. However, the story can also delve into intense and thought-provoking subject matter, occasionally touching on adult themes. Additionally, players are sometimes faced with choices that can have serious consequences, but fortunately, there is a generous rewind mechanic available to rescue them from potentially disastrous outcomes.
If you find yourself in need of assistance, you have the option of reaching out to your superiors or “frenemies” such as Lieutenant Meg Stryker, Councilwoman Isadora Ashe, and Jester Malcolm. Their input can sometimes prove helpful or entirely pointless, depending on the daily “royal writ” instructions. Sometimes, you encounter the same characters, but their personalities may shift, revealing deceitful or benevolent intentions as they strive to navigate their way through the Sprawl.
Lil’s shifts are primarily during the day, allowing for encounters with the enigmatic Echo the Wanderer. However, my personal favourite will be the night shift, which offers a different ambience and the possibility of encountering intriguing characters.
The creatures are just much more fun to encounter during the night shift with some being creepy, others are just spooky and silly in their own way. There are two levels in which Lil will be working on the night shifts. Among these creatures are vampires, slashers, tree entities, witches, and more. Some may look evil but with good intentions while others are just pure evil. What’s entertaining is that the developers included a twist on certain interrogations. Instead of simply granting entry or denying their visit, you have the opportunity to distract them by exploiting their weaknesses. One notable encounter involves a scenario where I can utilize rice grains for the creature to count them all until sunrise.
One character that stands out for me is Stabitha Grieves. This amalgamation of various 80s slasher horror tropes possesses both an amusing and creepy aspect. Her soft “innocent” voice can fool you so better to whip out the truth spray on her.
Although its central theme revolves around comedy, it possesses an underlying layer of heartfelt emotions that resonate with players. The game’s characters and supporting cast evoke a genuine sense of attachment, allowing you to invest in their development and care for them deeply.
In terms of its overall gameplay, Lil’ Guardsman can be finished in around 9 hours and the pacing is smooth for each level. The level complexity can be trickier the more you progress in the game, with 12 levels in total. It’s great that the game doesn’t fully focus on Lil’s guard duty but also traverses around the Sprawl.
Some of the most visited locations are the Twisted Sisters Tavern, the Digsite, the Goblinball Stadium, and more. She can interact with familiar characters and even new ones. Interestingly, players will encounter an intriguing character wearing different hats and still looking sad. I just love how exaggerated the character is and couldn’t help but interact with it every time I pass him. I still wish to this day that he finds his perfect hat.
Apart from questioning visitors at the guard shed, Lil’s role also involves utilizing her deduction skills in diverse scenarios, which adds to the game’s variety and is enjoyable to play. Such scenarios like having to choose the culprit, the saviour of the princess, and recruit soldiers to the battlefield have made Lil one too many times in a state of panic attack (she is a 12-year-old, after all). As players progress through each level, the game’s storyline expands, transitioning from an ordinary castle guard to the princess/queen’s advisor to save the realm from falling into enemies’ clutches. With each completed level, the story becomes increasingly intricate, immersing players in its captivating narrative.
While Lil’ Guardsman undoubtedly excels in many areas, certain aspects may be perceived as flaws. One possible improvement would be the inclusion of crystal powers during Lil’s shifts. However, it is understandable that certain limitations must exist to maintain the game’s difficulty level and overall balance.
Simply put, Lil’ Guardsman is undoubtedly a remarkable title that provides players with a one-of-a-kind gaming experience. Its blend of comedy, cozy adventure, puzzles, and fantasy offers a refreshing take on an indie comedy adventure. It reminds me of watching an animation series but you get to control the outcome of the main character. The game’s interactive nature, heartfelt characters, and humorous tone make it a standout title that fans will definitely cherish for years to come.
Lil’ Guardsman was reviewed on PC via Steam based on a review copy provided by the publisher. Lil’ Guardsman will launch for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 24 January 2024.
