Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2 To Run At 30FPS; Co-Founder Left Company

Ninja Theory’s highly anticipated Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga has been the topic of discussion within the gaming community, with recent revelations shedding light on both its technical performance and internal studio dynamics.

Recently, it was revealed that Hellblade 2, developed exclusively for Xbox Series consoles and PC using Unreal Engine 5, will run at a locked 30 frames per second on consoles. Despite this limitation, the game’s VFX director emphasised the aim for a “cinematic” experience, citing the slow and weighty gameplay as complementary to the frame rate choice.

While some players may express disappointment, particularly after Bethesda’s Starfield faced similar constraints, the game’s status as a technical showcase, as recognised by Polygon, remains unscathed.

The decision to cap the frame rate raises questions, particularly regarding the potential influence of accommodating the lower-powered Xbox Series S. However, the game’s immersive qualities are undeniable, with Ninja Theory’s meticulous attention to detail evident in its use of Unreal Engine 5, motion-captured animations, and authentic Icelandic landscapes.

A Shift in Leadership

In an unexpected twist, Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades, a pivotal figure in the studio’s creative direction, has departed from the company. A visit by Polygon to the studio for a Hellblade 2 preview revealed Antoniades’ absence, igniting speculation promptly confirmed by an Xbox spokesperson.

While his influence on past Ninja Theory titles like Heavenly Sword and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is undeniable, his departure marks a transition in leadership for Hellblade 2. Now under the guidance of environment art director Dan Attwell, visual effects director Mark Slater-Tunstill, and audio director David Garcia, the game’s development continues unabated.

Despite these internal shifts, the excitement surrounding Hellblade 2 remains palpable, with Microsoft and Ninja Theory recently announcing a release date of 21 May. The decision for a digital-only release, priced at US$50, reflects a commitment to accessibility while maintaining the immersive experience players expect. As the countdown to release begins, anticipation mounts for the next chapter in Senua’s journey, promising a gripping adventure intertwined with technical innovation.
