Original Fallout Lead Tim Cain On The Fallout TV Series: “I was so engrossed by it visually..”

The Fallout TV show has been getting rave reviews since its debut in 11 April on Amazon Prime Video. The adaptation of the video game series seems to be as faithful to the source material as possible while presenting a brand-new storyline for all to enjoy. So how do the original creators of Fallout feel about the show.

Tim Cain, the producer and one of the leads of the 1997 original Fallout CRPG title, made a video about his experiences and thoughts about the show. Specifically, the premiere of the Fallout TV show. Cain praised the series for its visuals, performances, storytelling, and vibe:

“I was literally at the edge of my seat. […] I was just looking at all the props. I realized after a few minutes went by that I had not followed the dialogue at all, because I was so engrossed by it visually.”

However, he also expressed his disappointment with how fans project onto and treat many of the people who have worked on Fallout. This is specifically about the tribalism between the Fallout games under Bethesda (Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76), and the Fallout games under Interplay, Black Isle, and Obsidian (Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas).

“Some of the stuff you [series fans] say online is so off. You guys can be really destructive. Which is odd, because you do it to people who are trying to make things.”

Some of the more vitriolic fans brought up the video to Brian Fargo, founder of publisher Interplay (who published the first Fallout) and leads RPG studio inXile. Back then, Tim Cain was critical of Brian Fargo’s leadership & management when doing Fallout sequels, leading to Cain leaving the development of Fallout 2. However, the Fallout 2 development cycle was complicated and was over 20 years ago; they got over it and can get along.

As someone who played both the Bethesda-run and Interplay/Black Isle/Obsidian Fallout games, I do enjoy them in their different ways. And I’ve kept an open mind about the TV series, and enjoyed it as a result. I’ve also dealt with a few of these fans, mostly from the Interplay camp on the forums during my GameAxis/GameSpot days, and they usually make mountains out of molehills. These are the kinds of people who just want to be vocal and force their opinions onto others online because they probably would be spineless doing that face-to-face without coming off as a troglodyte.

Yes, there are such things as bad video game movie/TV adaptations (Halo, the recent Mortal Kombat movie), but the Fallout TV show is made with love for the source material and given quite a bit of production money to capture that vibe Tim was talking about.
