Calm Your Tits, PC Gamers: The Next Diablo Is Slated For The PC

No doubt the Blizzard and Diablo community are still up in arms about that upcoming mobile game. Well, they don’t have anything to worry about if the following newspiece is of any indication.

According to a recent Kotaku feature on Diablo and Blizzard, Blizzard’s Diablo team (Team 3) are currently working on a project called Fenris. That’s basically the code-name for the current incarnation of Diablo IV.

Here’s the info so far:

  • Blizzard has been working on this version of the game since 2016, and so far the team is optimistic about the direction. A former employee said that the game’s design director Luis Barriga had a strong vision for that game that many were excited about.
  • The game will be out for the PC, but whether it’ll have a simultaneous PC/console release or a PC-first release; that’s up in the air for now.
  • The game’s art direction is following this mantra: embrace the darkness. The team wanted to make this game not feel or look as cartoony as Diablo III, but instead make it more like Diablo II. To quote a current Blizzard employee: “They want to make [Fenris] gross, make it dark, [get rid of] anything that was considered cartoony in Diablo III… Make what people were afraid of in Diablo II, but modern.”
  • The game isn’t going to be out until 2020 or later.
  • There’s a chance the game might eschew the isometric view in favour of an over-the-shoulder third-person view ala Dark Souls. To quote another developer:

“The question that kept getting asked is, ‘If there’s going to be a ‘strike’ equivalent, where you’re forced into a very story-focused, well-designed level of a dungeon, what does that look like in Diablo? What if we still had a core Diablo game that just happened to have a bunch of people on the map to do other cool stuff?”

  • How will Fenris make money? That’s the question Blizzard is asking themselves while thinking of long-term monetization for the Diablo series.

That’s all we have so far. Moral of the story: when Blizzard says they have multiple Diablo projects oncoming, chances are part 4 might be in the mix. So yeah, put down those pitchforks: it’ll be a long wait until we get loot-hunting and hoarding again Diablo-style.
