E3 2019: Luigi’s Mansion 3 Looks Like The Ghostbusters Game We Deserve

During Nintendo Direct E3 2019, the company revealed Nintendo Switch exclusive Luigi’s Mansion 3, the sequel to 2013’s Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon. It is slated to arrive sometime in 2019.

The premise is simple, Luigi sneaked around a haunted hotel and fights ghosts using a Poltergust, which uncannily looks like a proton pack.

To a franchise newbie like yours truly, Luigi’s Mansion 3 looks like the Ghostbusters game we all deserve. The game looks fun and charming with gameplay that seems to be extremely addicting, as players can beat ghosts by sucking them into their proton pack or even summon Goougi, a jelly version of Luigi who comes with his own set of unique skills.

According to hands-on experience by our friends at Kotaku, the gameplay in Luigi’s Mansion 3 will follow a more “traditional free-flowing approach to exploration“. Players can interact with objects and the environment by pointing Luigi’s flashlight or using the Poltergust, the latter of which will also be used to solve puzzles involving curtains and elevators.

Here’s how catching ghosts work in Luigi’s Mansion 3. The player shines their flashlight onto the ghost, then vacuum them using the Poltergust and immediately pulling against the direction they are moving in. A meter will then appear and start filling.

Once it is full, players can use a move called Slam, which is basically doing to the ghosts what the Hulk did to Loki at the end of 2012’s The Avengers.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 producers Kensuke Tanabe and Yoshihito Ikebata are promising more varied typed of ghosts this time around, but there will still be generic colour-coded ghosts as normal enemies. The multiplayer mode for the upcoming game is called the Scarescraper mode, and it challenges players to work together and complete tasks as they move up the floors of a hotel.

Nintendo will surely reveal more details and information in the months to come. In the meantime, check out the trailer for Luigi’s Mansion 3 below.
