Almost US$30 Billion Spent On Mobile Games In First Half Of 2019

Analysts at Sensor Tower report that mobile game spending have reached up to an estimated amount of US$29.6 billion across both the Apple App Store and Google Play Games.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Compared to the first half of 2018, this is a 11.3% year-on-year increase. Spending in Google Play grew a considerable 16.8% while the App Store only managed to chart an increase of 7.8%. No doubt this has something to do with the effects of China’s 9-month licensing freeze back in 2018.
  • Believe it or not, Candy Crush Saga is still one of the top five mobile games in terms of spending. The sweet and savory match-three puzzle game ranked No. 4, right above PUBG Mobile.

  • Honor of Kings maintained its spot as the No.1 grossing mobile game, generating more than US$728 million. If the game sounds unfamiliar, it’s actually the Chinese title for Tencent‘s MOBA game Arena of Valor.
  • In terms of downloads alone, PUBG Mobile is the third most downloaded game in the first half of this year. Color Bump 3D and Garena Free Fire holds the first and second spot respectively. It should be noted that iOS downloads fell 1.4% compared to last year’s first half, probably due to the same factors mentioned earlier.

These numbers show that Tencent alone has made almost US$900 million just in the first six months of 2019. If not for that licensing freeze and other… headaches from the Chinese government, they would’ve probably made US$1 billion.
