The New WWE 2K Game Looks Like A Spiritual Successor To All-Stars

Remember 2011’s WWE All-Stars with those midget versions of famous wrestlers with over-the-top arcade-style gameplay? While we’re not getting a mainline WWE 2K game this year, 2K Games has announced a new game, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, which looks like a spiritual successor to WWE All-Stars.
Developed by Saber Interactive, WWE 2K Battlegrounds will focus on “social pick-up-and-play fun” with “arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves”. Fans of the franchise have been asking for a sequel to WWE All-Stars for many years now, and it’s finally coming.
As for the next mainline WWE 2K title, the publisher has confirmed that they will be extending the production timeline, ensuring that developer Visual Concepts will have ample time to create the next title. However, it sounds like the next title will most likely be WWE 2K22.
Patrick Gilmore will be the new executive producer of the WWE 2K franchise from now on. He is a veteran game developer, with years of work under his belt. These include 2013’s Killer Instinct, the Medal of Honor franchise, Amazon’s New World, and Disney’s Aladdin for Sega Genesis.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds is slated to release for unspecified platforms sometime in Fall 2020. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
