Spider-Man Movies Finds A New Streaming Home

Disney and Sony Pictures have reached a multi-year licensing deal to bring Spider-Man and other Sony Pictures movies to Disney Plus.

Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases from 2022 to 2026 will head to Disney’s streaming services and other television networks (FX, ABC, etc) after they leave Netflix. However, the package currently only covers U.S. markets.

What does this mean? Well, Sam’s Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the two Amazing Spider-Man movies, and Tom Holland’s Homecoming and Far From Home Marvel entries will be available to watch on Disney Plus. That means that almost the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe will be available on Disney Plus soon.

With Netflix and Disney deals combined, Sony is expected to rake in about a whopping US$3 billion in movie licensing over the life of the deals.

ABC, Freeform, FX Networks and Acquisitions for Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution head of business operations Chuck Saftler said (via Variety):

“This landmark multi-year, platform-agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels.

This is a win for fans, who will benefit from the ability to access the very best content from two of Hollywood’s most prolific studios across a multitude of viewing platforms and experiences.”

Recently, Tom Holland squashed the rumours of previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in the upcoming movie.

Directed by Jon Watts (who also directed 2017’s Spider-Man Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home), Spider-Man No Way Home is still filming and in production, but it is slated to premiere on 17 December 2021 later this year.
