PlayStation CEO Made Abortion Rights Comments, Allegedly Upsets Staff

Things in PlayStation may not be looking so grand right now.

A Bloomberg report stated that PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has urged staff to “respect differences of opinion” on abortion rights via an email. Said email addresses the recent leak of a draft of the US Supreme Court opinion to overturn Roe vs. Wade, which legalizes abortion in the United States.

He stated that the company is “multi-faceted and diverse, holding many different points of view.

“[We] owe it to each other and to PlayStation’s millions of users to respect differences of opinion among everyone in our internal and external communities. Respect does not equal agreement. But it is fundamental to who we are as a company and as a valued global brand.”

Here’s where it gets allegedly iffy: the statement, which does not take a stance on the abortion issue, was followed by “five detailed paragraphs” about his two cat’s birthday, their habits, and his desire to get a dog. This is followed by an excerpt declaring “that dogs really are man’s best friend, they know their place, and perform useful functions like biting burglars and chasing balls that you throw for them”. I don’t know about you, but this seems like textbook passive aggressiveness; something a Southeast Asian taskmaster boss would say to keep their workers and employees in line.

Some employees in PlayStation are expressing dissatisfaction and are upset at the tone of the email, with some of them feeling their rights were “disrespected or trivialized”. Below are a number of Twitter comments by prominent content creators and folks of the video game industry; you be the judge about it.
