Cleaning Up Your Mess: A Chat With The Maker Of Monster Mop Up

Monster Mop Up is an upcoming title by Terahard Ltd, coming straight out of London. The game features you, a monster agent of the Ministry of Monster Concealment, out to rescue the little Ragamuffins and clean up after them as you go.

We had the opportunity to speak with Terahard Ltd’s CEO, Aris Tsevrenis, and find out more about how this monstrous tale came to be. You can also check out the demo on Steam!

Please introduce yourself to our readers!

Hello, my name is Aris Tsevrenis. I am the CEO of Terahard Ltd for the past 11 years.

Tell us about your journey into game development! How did you get your start?

I finished my MSc in games development in 2010 under industry experts working on games like Black & White in London, UK. I then started in the industry and worked in different companies for a number of years. At some point, I switched and created Terahard Ltd where we worked on projects for “work for hire” and our own IPs. And here we are today.

Can you tell us about Terahard Studios, and what you do there?

We have two branches in the company, the games branch and the interactive applications branch where we create VR/AR and other innovative game-like experiences. For games we either work for hire to develop games for different clients or focus on our own. We have worked on more than 100 projects since the start of Terahard and have released games for every platform along with a number of awards that came with them.

Congratulations on the demo release of Monster Mop Up! Can you give us a brief summary of the game?

Thank you very much! The game is the passion project of our Creative Director Gary. He wanted us to build it for a long time and now that we did he’s supervising it as well. In MMU you are a “Men in Black” kind of an agent where you travel to different places to rescue the Ragamuffins, little furry creatures that cause mess wherever they go. At the same time, you need to clean up after the mess they have created so that humans will not realize what happened whilst they were gone.

What were some of the inspirations for Monster Mop Up’s gameplay?

The most obvious ones are Viscera Cleanup Detail, Monsters Inc, and Men in Black.

Where did the idea of the Ministry of Monster Concealment come from?

It was a merger of the gameplay inspirations. Mostly Monster Inc. and Men in Black.

Tell us a bit about Monster Mop Up’s development! How has the process been?

It’s a new pipeline we’ve set up this year. We’ve been prototyping it for 3 months, then started development in March all the way till now. It had a lot of new things for us to set up as we want to use this pipeline for all our new projects. For Monster Mop Up our paint system changed halfway through development to be more like Splatoon than Viscera’s system. We were worried it might affect everything but our lead programmers managed to make the change without much of an issue.

What are your hopes for Monster Mop Up’s release? Do you hope the players come away with a specific experience or feeling?

We want them to explore the game as much as possible as we’ve hidden quite a few features and tricks in it. Also the wholesome feeling that you are to save the little Ragamuffins and make up a cozy home for them!

Monster Mop Up is coming soon to PC. You can check out the demo here.
