Will We Get A Chrono Trigger 2? The Original Developers Answer That Question

It’s a known fact that 1995’s Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo is one of the most influential Japanese role-playing games of all time, usually in most people’s top 10 games of all time list. Chrono Trigger got a sequel in the form of Chrono Cross in the 2000s for PlayStation, but many fans were divided about its existence and gameplay.

Fast forward to now; with many remakes and sequels to long-past games popping up, will Square Enix make a Chrono Trigger follow-up that isn’t as divergent as Chrono Cross? Well, the original creators of Chrono Trigger – Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest series creator), Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy creator), and Kazuhiko Torishima- all chimed in together and met up in person for the first time in 30 years (via Radiko.jp and Genki_JPN). The trio stated officially that there was some interest in making a sequel happen, but it’s unlikely in the grand scheme of things.

Here’s a breakdown of the conversation:

  • Torishima joked that Chrono Trigger 2 would be easy to do since Square and Enix have merged.
  • Torishima said he’d have to call up Akira Toriyama to bring him along.
  • The three developers said nowadays they’d like to work on a small game with a small team.
  • Sakaguchi joked with the following statement: “Let’s make a simple Chrono Trigger 2. lol”
  • the others laughed and replied by saying they’d like to tackle something for Switch or mobile.
  • Sakaguchi said Chrono Trigger 2 would probably end up becoming much bigger.
  • Eventually, all of them said it would be difficult to see them doing Chrono Trigger 2.
  • The trio said if they did ever make something together again they’d want to do something brand-new.

There you have it: the three of them would rather make a new project together instead of a sequel.

In related news, the three of them talked about a recent JRPG that emulates Chrono Trigger’s style: Sea of Stars. The three of them said that the game looks like Chrono Trigger, found the game to be nostalgic, and said developer Sabotage Studio did a good job in making the JRPG. That’s pretty high praise for one of our top games of 2023.
