Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess Combines Action, Strategy, & Luscious Japanese Fantasy For 2024

[Update 8/3/2024: Capcom released a 6-minute deep dive gameplay video for the game. This video is added to the story.]

Capcom has finally revealed gameplay of its upcoming game Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and it’s the company’s own take on a real-time strategy genre. But with more involved combat and character action, it seems.

In Kunitsu-Gami, you play as a warrior named Soh who has to work together with the divine maiden Yoshiro to purge and cleanse the villages of Mt. Kafuku of evil demon defilement. You have 12 masks to recover and gain power from, so you have 12 levels to go through, more or less.

Kunitsu-Gami is divided into two cycles of gameplay: daytime and nighttime. In the daytime, you purge the defilement in your village and set roles for your villagers via the masks you collect. You also have to set defences and towers before the impending assault.

At night, the real-time strategy action happens as you fend off the yokai and protect your maiden Yoshiro. At the same time, you have to lead Yoshiro to purge the Torii gate located at the far end of each nighttime defense mission. While you control Soh in action combat form, you have your masked-powered villagers to assist you.

Think the old classic action strategy title Overlord or even Pikmin, but on a smaller scale, and you can see where Capcom is going with Kunitsu-Gami. There’s also a Dancing Sword Action mechanic where players purge the defilement by “dancing”. This is inspired by Shinto religion in Japan; specifically the traditional Kagura dances that’s used to purge evil spirits.

Here are some words from the game’s director Shuichi Kawata:

“I hope you enjoyed the new trailer for Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess! It’s been a while since the title was announced last year, but I hope the new gameplay you just watched was worth the wait. After releasing Shinsekai: Into the Depths four years ago, we’re ready to open a new chapter for players around the world to enjoy.

This game features a very distinct blend of action and strategy genres and takes strong inspiration from various elements of Japanese culture. With all of that, we’re excited (and maybe a little nervous…in a good way!) to have everyone experience this game.

We are currently in the final stages of development, and the team is working hard to be able to deliver the best experience this game can offer, so we hope you look forward to it.”

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess will be out for Xbox Series, PC, and PlayStation 5 in 2024. The game will be a Day One Game Pass title as well.
