Unicorn Overlord Guide & Tips: Liberate Your Kingdom

Atlus and Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord is now for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. It’s a new tactical RPG game from the developer of previous hits such as Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim. Head on over here for our full and in-depth spoiler-free review of Unicorn Overlord.

Here are some tips on how to become the best ruler you can be:

Take Your Time & Explore As Much As You Can To Avoid Missing Side Quests For Recruitable Characters Before You Do The Main Quests

In Unicorn Overlord, you’re free to explore the Overworld but the missions and quests are all level-gated. That being said, in my playthrough, even though I explored as much as I could, I still somehow missed some side quests for recruitable characters.

For instance, I was already near level 40 and near the endgame when I discovered a previously unexplored area filled with missions and quests level-gated to around level 15. Sure, this means that the characters aren’t exactly missable even if you complete them later in the game but by the time I recruited them, they were severely under-levelled compared to my other characters.

So, the lesson here is to take your time and explore the world as much as you can.

Don’t rush to the main quests because…

It’s Easy To Be Under-Levelled, So Focus On Quality Over Quantity Even Though It’s Not Easy To Choose Or Balance Between Over 60 Different Characters

Unicorn Overlord is a pretty grindy game even on the lowest difficulty. You’ll spend most of your time playing side quests and recruiting characters and before you know it, you’ll have a hard time balancing them out and you’ll find yourself under-levelled for the main quests.

To avoid being under-levelled for the main quests, focus on the characters you really want to use and focus on expanding existing units instead of unlocking more units. This is because only characters who participate in battle will gain EXP and level up.

Of course, the easiest way to grind in Unicorn Overlord is…

You Can Replay The Sigil Trial Missions To Grind For EXP

While Unicorn Overlord is grindy by nature, you can’t replay main quests, side quests or liberation quests to grind for EXP. However, the easiest way to grind lower-level characters in Unicorn Overlord is to replay Sigil Trial missions.

You’ll unlock Sigil Trial missions when you recruit a character named Selvie and find Stonehenge-like places on the Overworld map.

In Towns And Cities, Complete The Deliveries Whenever Possible And Station Characters As Guards There

Firstly, completing deliveries is an easy way to increase the Honor resource but most importantly of all, station your characters as guards there whenever possible (after completing the deliveries and restoring the town/city, of course).

It’s important to note that it doesn’t matter WHO you station as a guard in the towns/cities because it doesn’t make a difference at all whoever is stationed at any place and you’ll still be able to use them in battles. Just choose any random character to station as a guard whenever possible because it’s an easy way to get more resources.

Every time after completing a quest, time passes and the guards you station in the towns/cities will automatically accumulate resources/money for you.

You Can Change The Difficulty At Any Time

If things get too hard, you can actually change the difficulty in Unicorn Overlord at any time. Sure, the game tells you this at the very start but it’s easy to forget about this once you’re deep into the game.
