Is The World Ready For A Live Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Series?

Short answer: no. But according to Netflix, it seems like it wants to tempt fate and go with “hell yes”.

The film-streaming company announced that it will team up with Nickelodeon and bring the awesomesauce story of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph in live-action form. Because the powers that be believed that it’s been years since the last Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action movie that was directed by M.Night Shyamalamadingdong.

I use the word “directed” loosely here; it was a craptacular adaptation. Check out how earthbending is handled in this adaptation for the ages.

The good news? The live-action series will be helmed by original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, so you can be sure that your favourite moments in the animated series will get the live-action adaptation it deserves.

They even said so in the official presser, right down to the bit where they take a jab at M.Night Shyamalan’s disasterpiece.

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building.

Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

As the guy who proclaimed on The Last King Podcast that Avatar: The Last Airbender is arguably one of the greatest goddamn TV shows on the planet that’s meant for kids, I am HIGHLY skeptical about this Netflix series. Be honest: do we really need another live adaptation for this when the whole 3 seasons of this animated marvel are available for rewatching on the same platform? This reeks of desperate cash grab tactics and the old “remake stuff from close to a decade ago”; the same stunt Disney is pulling off right now with their live-action versions of Cinderella, Beauty & The Beast, and The Jungle Book.

Prove me wrong,  Konietzko and DiMartino. Prove me wrong.
