Happy 25th Anniversary, PlayStation! The Best PS1 Games Of All Time
Suikoden 2

JRPGs were dominated by Final Fantasy in the 90s, but the likes of Suikoden 2 also elevated the genre beyond its conventional limits. One of the best but most underrated JRPGs on the PS1, 1999’s Suikoden 2 feature new gameplay mechanics unseen in other JRPGs at the time.
This included the ability to recruit up to a whopping 108 allies to fight alongside the protagonist, instead of the fixed and permanent companions in other JRPGs. This made for a more dynamic and choice-driven game, sort of like Pokemon but with actual human allies in the place of cute little critters.
