Sonic Opens Big In US; Breaks Video Game Movie Record

Sonic The Hedgehog has broken the record for biggest box office opening weekend for a video game movie adaptation in the US, beating previous record-holder Detective Pikachu. The Sonic movie has managed to garner US$57 million in the US (beating Detective Pikachu‘s US$54.3 million) and US$43 million internationally, for a grand total of US$100 million.

According to box office projections (via The Hollywood Reporter), the longer four-day weekend (Presidents’ Day) in the US means that the haul for Sonic The Hedgehog is expected to be US$68 by the end of Monday, which will bring the total to an impressive US$111 million.

Despite all that, it’s important to note that Detective Pikachu still holds the record for biggest video game movie worldwide opening weekend, with US$166 million thanks to a huge international performance.

At the time of writing, the Sonic The Hedgehog movie currently boasts a 63 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but an unbelievable 95 percent audience rating. That’s a pretty high disparity between professional reviewers and general viewers, the latter of whom mostly liked the movie.

In the meantime, check out my full review of Sonic The Hedgehog here.
