Captain Marvel’s 90s-Themed Website Teases Iconic Fantastic Four Villain
By Alleef Ashaari|February 10, 2019|0 Comment
Marvel has recently launched an official website for Captain Marvel, and it looks just like a gaudy site from the 90s. With its exaggerated fonts and animation, the Captain Marvel website won’t look out of place in 1995 (which is also coincidentally when the upcoming movie will take place).
The 90s-themed Captain Marvel website has information about the movie and its characters, a simple ‘Spot The Skrull’ game, as well as a couple of links leading to Fandango and the movie’s trailer, amongst others. However, the biggest easter egg can be found right there on the website’s URL, which begins with “https://i.annihil.us/”.
It spells out the name, Annihilus, who is actually one of the Fantastic Four’s most iconic villains. Well, maybe not as iconic as Doctor Doom or Galactus but still a major one nonetheless, especially in the larger scheme of the Marvel universe.
First appearing in 1968, Annihilus is the ruler of another dimension called the Negative Zone. In the comics, he became a threat to the entire universe when he invaded with his Annihilation Wave, a massive fleet of warships filled with countless insectoid armies. With his Cosmic Control Rod, he can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Silver Surfer or any heavy hitter.
This Annihilus tease could mean one of several things. He could be making his unannounced debut in Captain Marvel (either in the movie itself or a post-credits reveal) and become the potential ‘other villain’ that’s going to be featured in Avengers: Endgame. Fan theories and rumors have been going around that a bigger and more powerful villain will likely appear in Avengers: Endgame.
Even if he turns out to be absent in both Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, there’s always a chance that Marvel could be saving him for their eventual Fantastic Four movie, now that they’re in the process of regaining the rights to their First Family (via Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox).
The most likely explanation for all this is that “https://i.annihil.us/” is simply the domain server name for Marvel websites, though it’s definitely much more exciting to believe that it’s a deliberate easter egg for now. If not, the 90s-themed Captain Marvel website is still pretty cool and you should check it out.
I’m looking forward to seeing how or if Annihilus will be making his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Captain Marvel is slated to release on 7 March 2019. In the meantime, head on over here to learn more about the character’s history and origins, or check out my breakdown and analysis of the most recent Captain Marvel trailer here.
