Indonesia is upping its game in the esports department with a brand new university tournament series: the IEL University Series 2019.
The series is the first official esports competition for university level in Indonesia which is fully supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), Indonesian Society for Recreational Sports Federation (FORMI), and Indonesia Esports Association (IESPA). The competition is also authorized by the Federation of Electronic Sports Asia (AeSF), which will later become part of the official university league under the auspices of IESPA.
Students from 12 universities play against each other in Mobile Legends and Dota 2. The universities involved are:
12 IEL participating universities will be divided into two groups that will carry out the preliminary rounds conducted online from January to March 2019. Then, the 4 best teams from each branch will compete in the semifinals and finals at the end of April 2019.
The venue for the IEL 2019 University Series final will take place at the LigaGame Arena. The total prize of 1 billion Rupiah (RM289,535) will be contested by IEL 2019 University Series participants in this first season.
The IEL 2019 University Series was held to accommodate talented young people from 12 leading campuses in 5 cities to develop their abilities while preparing the successors for national esports athletes. The birth of these new talents will enrich Indonesia’s esports ecosystem to become better and sustainable.
The brainchild behind this league is MIX 360, a business entity to develop esports in Indonesia. Together with sponsors such as Razer, AirAsia, and Rexus, as well as partners like Meta.us, GoodDay and LigaGame, make organising this league possible.
Razer, being the main official sponsor for the program, is committed to sharing their expertise in managing the ecosystem of the largest integrated hardware, software and services for gamers to ensure smooth content delivery to the fans.
