Aliens & Agents: Getting To Know The Players Of Captain Marvel

The first of three Marvel Cinematic Universe films in 2019 is set to grace our cinemas very soon. Captain Marvel not only has to be a prelude to next month’s Avengers Endgame but also introduce a brand new hero in a different setting.

As Marvel Studios’ first film with a female lead, this movie will lead the way for many more like it. In this article, I’ll be giving a rundown on all the notable characters in Captain Marvel, heroes and villains alike.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson)

Captain Marvel Carol

In the comics, Carol Danvers was actually the seventh person to carry the mantle of Captain Marvel, as she was originally known as Ms. Marvel from 1968 to 2012. However, her MCU origin will likely be altered to make her the first person to assume the mantle, as we still have no idea if Mar-Vell (the original Captain Marvel in the comics) will be playing a role in the movie.

Here’s an intro to Carol Danvers herself: She was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force until one day when she encounters Captain Marvel and gets caught in an explosion caused by a Kree device called the Psyche-Magnitron. The accident fused her DNA with Kree DNA, which grants her super strength, flight and the ability to absorb energy and release it as photon blasts. She can sometimes turn Binary, allowing her to tap into the powers of a “white hole”, making her more much powerful on a scale similar to that of the Silver Surfer or other cosmic characters.

Well, that’s what happened in the comics anyways. In the upcoming movie, we’ll meet a different Carol Danvers, one who is already a member of an elite Kree military unit called Starforce. What we can glean from the trailers so far is that she was a US Air Force fighter pilot in the past. However, the biggest difference between comic book Carol and MCU Carol is that the latter doesn’t remember her human past.

Therefore, the movie will begin with Carol Danvers believing that she’s a Kree named Vers. Recovering her memories will then be a key plot point in the movie. A huge chunk of her life is missing and thus her origin story is incomplete for now, so we’ll have to wait until the movie releases to know more.

Yon-Rogg (Jude Law)

Captain Marvel Yon-Rogg

Until very recently, Jude Law’s character in Captain Marvel was unconfirmed. Thanks to a tweet by the official Twitter account of Marvel UK and Ireland, we now know that his character is indeed Yon-Rogg and not Mar-Vell, as was previously heavily speculated.

In the comics, Yon-Rogg was a Kree commander who was jealous of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. It was his fault that the Psyche-Magnitron exploded, thus giving Carol Danvers her powers. He doesn’t have any particularly impressive abilities, except superhuman strength, speed, and stamina.

In the upcoming movie, Yon-Rogg is the leader of Kree military unit Starforce, as well as a mentor to Carol Danvers. The MCU’s version of the character seems to be portrayed as an unwavering commander, not unlike how Mar-Vell is like in the comics before he became Captain Marvel.

It remains to be seen if Yon-Rogg will be friend or foe in the upcoming movie, though it does seem more likely that he’ll become a villain. He could be in cahoots with the Supreme Intelligence or a Skrull in disguise, who knows.

Supreme Intelligence (Annette Bening)

Captain Marvel Supreme Intelligence

Annette Benning’s role was a secret until recently when she revealed that she will be portraying the Kree Supreme Intelligence during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In the comics, the Supreme Intelligence is an entity made from a collective of the greatest Kree minds throughout the history of the Kree empire. As such, it is the de facto ruler of the Kree Empire, to the point of being regarded as a divine being by the Kree. Its main goal was to jumpstart the evolution of the Kree race after learning that the Kree was at an evolutionary dead end.

The Supreme Intelligence looks like a giant potato in a jar or Zordon from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but the MCU version will be different. In the upcoming movie, the Supreme Intelligence will somehow have a humanoid appearance, which is a major departure from the comics.

Talos (Ben Mendelsohn)

Captain Marvel Talos 1

The main antagonist in Captain Marvel is Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, who is a leader of the shapeshifting alien race known as the Skrulls. Mendelsohn also recently revealed that his character will be secret;y masquerading as a human as Nick Fury’s boss in SHIELD.

Captain Marvel Talos 2

Talos in his original Skrull form.

In the comics, Talos the Untamed is a relatively minor villain, as he was one of the few Skrulls who cannot shapeshift. He is considered a ‘mutant’ of sorts by his own race, and he makes up for his lack of shapeshifting by having superhuman strength and durability.

In the upcoming movie, Talos can shapeshift, unlike his comic book counterpart. As the Kree-Skrull War reaches Earth, it will be interesting to see how the conflict will be depicted.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg)

Captain Marvel Nick Fury

These two characters will be all too familiar to fans of the MCU, though we’ll be meeting much younger versions of them in Captain Marvel. As the upcoming movie is set in the 90s, both Nick Fury and Phil Coulson have not yet become the seasoned director and agent of SHIELD we know and love.

Captain Marvel Phil Coulson

In the upcoming movie, Nick Fury will still have both of his eyes intact, while Phil Coulson will still have most of his hair. Several weeks ago at the Captain Marvel fan event in Singapore, Samuel L. Jackson himself confirmed that we can look forward to seeing more action from Nick Fury.

Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch)

Captain Marvel Maria Rambeau

In the upcoming movie, Maria Rambeau is one of Carol Danvers’ oldest friends who’s also a fellow air force pilot. In the comics, her daughter Monica grows up to become a superhero and the second person to claim the Captain Marvel mantle after Mar-Vell.

Maria Rambeau’s air force call sign in the movie, Photon, is an easter egg to one of Monica Rambeau’s many superhero names in the comics. This leaves the door open for the debut of an adult Monica in future MCU movies.

Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan)

Captain Marvel Minn-erva

In the upcoming movie, Minn-Erva is a Kree sniper and member of Starforce. In the comics, she’s a geneticist who also received powers from the Psyche-Magnitron. It doesn’t seem like she’ll have any powers in the movie, but let’s cross our fingers for now.

Korath (Djimon Hounsou)

Captain Marvel Korath

We first saw him as the guy who said “Who?” to Star-Lord in Guardians Of The Galaxy. In the upcoming movie, he’s a Kree mercenary and the second-in-command of Starforce. We already know that he will live on to appear in Guardians of The Galaxy, so his role probably won’t be major in Captain Marvel.

Goose (Reggie, Archie, Rizzo, and Gonzo)

Captain Marvel Goose

In the comics, Carol Danvers owns a pet cat named Chewie (after Star Wars’ Chewbacca) who is actually from an alien species called the Flerken. It could unleash a flurry of tentacles from inside its mouth. Check out the panel below to see that in action.

Captain Marvel Flerken

In the upcoming movie, Chewie’s name has been changed to Goose to better reflect the movie’s 90s setting. Its name is now based on the character Nick “Goose” Bradshaw from 1986’s Top Gun.

There you go, folks. Now that you know the major characters, check out Captain Marvel when it releases in Malaysian cinemas on 6 March 2019. In the meantime, head on over here to learn more about the history and origins of Captain Marvel, or check out all the things we learned from the recent Captain Marvel press conference in Singapore.
