Here’s How Gear & Cosmetics Work In Marvel’s Avengers
With Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers game coming this September, the publisher just released a guide to talk about the game’s economy in great detail. The post may make your head spin, so we’ll do our best to pass you the Cliff’s Notes version.
The only takeaway here is that most of these are optional and are mostly earned in-game. The Marketplace items cost real money.
The colourful stuff you put on your Avenger of choice. These come in four different varieties:
You can either earn them through mission completion rewards, craft them, or buy them. Here’s a detailed look at the stuff you need to get cosmetics and gear.
Resources come in Common (ex: Fragments), Rare (ex: Plasma), and Exotic varieties (ex: Uru) – and are traded with Vendors or used to upgrade gear. Resources can be found in Resource Crates, dropped by enemies, gained through dismantling Artifacts, received as Faction assignment rewards, and via Hero Challenge Cards.
The latter requires you to do cool things and achievements to earn rewards specific to that challenge. More on that below.
Patterns are earned through high-level crates, activities, Faction Missions, and increasing your Faction level. They can be used at Fabrication Machines to create an Outfit or Nameplate.
Units are the game’s soft-currency – in-game digital currency with no real-world value – which can be spent with Vendors. Units can be found in strongboxes or earned as rewards for increasing your Faction Level.
Vendors in the game (usually at Avengers HQ) sell cosmetics, gear, and rare resources in exchange for Units and common Resources.
Gear Vendors will sell you character-specific Gear and Resources in exchange for Fragments gained through play. Collecting and dismantling Gear will fill you full of Fragments and other resources, which is why it is worth picking everything up and dismantling unneeded items for resources to exchange or reinvest.
Cosmetic Vendors accept Units gained through play to purchase Outfits, Emotes, and Nameplates. Legendary Outfits rotate weekly, while Nameplates, Emotes, and Epic & Rare Outfits rotate daily.
You can also get stuff in the game’s Marketplace, which is at the front of the game’s menu screen and is outside the game’s narrative.
Here’s where the game pulls out its microtransaction hat. All of the cosmetic items in the Marketplace can only be bought with credits.
Credits are in-game currency that uses real money. 500 credits are worth US$5, while 10,000 credits are US$100. Credits come in packs of:
Bigger packs come with bonus free credits. One other point to note: the Marketplace deals only in cosmetics. Post-launch heroes like Hawkeye are free for all Marvel’s Avengers players.
Remember when we brought up Hero Challenge Cards briefly? Basically, you earn cool rewards by doing challenges.
Each Hero Challenge Card has 40 tiers of free and premium rewards. Rewards are earned via Challenge Points by completing daily and weekly challenges.
